You turn the heat on, the furnace is running, and most of the house feels comfortable. Then you walk into a bedroom or another part of the house and it feels noticeably colder.
Uneven heating is a common HVAC complaint, and there are several reasons one room may not be getting as warm as the rest of your Lake Havasu City home.
One of the simplest possibilities is an airflow problem. Check the vents in the colder room and make sure they’re completely open and aren’t being blocked by furniture, rugs, curtains, or other items. It sounds simple, but a partially closed or blocked vent can make a noticeable difference.
Your air filter can affect airflow as well. After a long Lake Havasu summer, the HVAC system has already spent months circulating air through the house. A dirty filter can restrict airflow and make it more difficult for the system to distribute heated air evenly.
The ductwork is another possibility. If a section of ductwork is leaking, damaged, disconnected, or poorly insulated, some of the heated air may never make it to the room where it’s supposed to go. Rooms farther away from the furnace or air handler can sometimes make these problems especially noticeable.
The issue can also be related to the home itself. Windows, doors, insulation, sun exposure, and the location of individual rooms can all affect indoor temperatures. A room with more exterior walls or older windows, for example, may lose heat faster than the rest of the house.
In other cases, uneven temperatures can point to an HVAC system that isn’t distributing air properly. The blower, duct design, system size, or other heating components may need to be inspected to determine why certain areas aren’t getting enough warm air.
If you’ve just started using your heat again for the season, pay attention to how the entire house feels rather than only looking at the thermostat. The thermostat may say the house has reached the temperature you selected while one or two rooms remain noticeably colder.
