You turn up the thermostat expecting warm air, the furnace starts running, and then you realize the air coming from the vents is cold. It’s a frustrating problem, especially when temperatures start dropping at night in Parker.
There are several reasons a heating system can run without actually warming your home, and some are much simpler than others.
The thermostat is a good place to start. Make sure it’s set to “heat” and that the fan setting is on “auto.” If the fan is set to “on,” it can continue circulating air even when the furnace isn’t actively heating. That can make it feel like the system is blowing cold air between heating cycles.
A dirty air filter can also cause heating problems. After a long Arizona summer, your HVAC system has already spent months moving air through the house. If the filter is clogged with dust and debris, restricted airflow can affect the way the system operates and may even cause some furnaces to shut down the heating cycle as a protective measure.
If you have a gas furnace, the problem could involve the ignition system, flame sensor, gas supply, or another component responsible for producing heat. The blower may still operate even when the furnace isn’t successfully heating the air.
Heat pumps can be a little different. Many homes use heat pumps for both cooling and heating, and the air coming from the vents may not feel as hot as the air produced by a traditional gas furnace. However, your home should still gradually warm to the temperature set on the thermostat. If it doesn’t, the system should be checked.
Sometimes cold air is only temporary. When a heating cycle first begins, the blower may move a small amount of cooler air through the ductwork before the system is fully producing heat. If the air becomes warm shortly afterward, that can be normal. Cold air that continues throughout the entire heating cycle is another story.
It’s also worth paying attention to anything else happening with the system. Repeatedly starting and stopping, unusual noises, strange smells, or a thermostat that never reaches the desired temperature can all provide clues that there is a larger heating problem.
Parker may spend much of the year dealing with Arizona heat, but winter nights can still get cold enough that a dependable heating system matters. Finding a problem early in the season is much better than discovering you have no heat when temperatures have already dropped.
